Gosford - Sept. 11, 2001 Organisation for the Central Coast Space Exposition is well in hand with events at the Laycock Street Theatre on Thursday night 11th October and a full day of activities at the Central Coast Campus of Newcastle University on Saturday 13th October. The Central Coast Space Expo is being organised by local non-profit group, the "Central Coast Space Frontier Society". The idea behind the Space Expo is to inspire our future scientists and engineers to pursue a space related career, with events and activities for students aged 8 - 18 years. President of the Central Coast Space Frontier Society Tony James said that this is the first time an event of this nature has been organised in Australia. "We've bringing together a lot of people who either work in the Australian space industry or are related to Australian space endeavours in some way to show our area's students what's available if they would like a career that's "out of this world". On Thursday night 11th October the Central Coast Space Expo will open with Australian born and current NASA Astronaut Dr Andrew Thomas speaking at the Laycock Street Theatre. Andy Thomas has made 3 space flights including spending 130 days on the Mir Space Station in 1998 and a "spacewalk" outside the new International Space Station in February this year. Andy became the "first Australian to walk in space". Saturday 13th October is the main day of the Central Coast Space Expo and will see a full day of activities at the Central Coast Campus at Ourimbah. The program includes exhibitions and demonstrations, "hands on" experiments, and numerous speakers in two of the lecture theatres. Topics include Space Tourism, space and the internet, education for a career in space, exploration of Mars, Australian launch bases, - the idea is to demonstrate that there are a number of space-related careers besides becoming an Astronaut. Mr James said that the Central Coast Space Expo is a very relaxed event with the emphasis on learning about what's really happening in space, and to have a bit of "fun". "We've designed the program with something for everyone with games and activities for the under 8's, "hands on" activities and demonstrations for students and interesting talks for students and adults. We've even got Central Coast scouts going for their space badges". The Central Coast Space Frontier Society is the local chapter of the National Space Society of Australia, which boasts chapters up and down the eastern seaboard. The space society is a group of volunteers, people who work to "bring about the day when ordinary people can work and live in space if they choose to". The main role of the space society is that of convenors and educators.
