Nouakchott, Mauritania (SPX) Dec 01, 2004 Intelsat Tuesday announced that La Mauritano Tunisienne de Telecommunications (Mattel), in order to support the expansion of its cellular network, has moved all traffic onto the Intelsat satellite system. Mattel's cellular network in Mauritania consists of nine sites, all of which are currently up and running on the IS-707 satellite located at 307(degree)E. In order to facilitate the transfer of traffic onto the IS-707 and to overcome in-country infrastructure obstacles, it was necessary for Intelsat to re-engineer Mattel's existing network by upgrading all modems, repointing existing antennas and modernizing other network components. The transition of services was seamless and did not interrupt either the domestic or international traffic of the cellular users carried over Mattel's network. "Since one of our business goals is to expand traffic and usage within the nine sites that comprise our network, we switched to the Intelsat system because it allowed us the freedom and flexibility to expand quickly, if necessary," said Mohamed Hadj Khalifa, General Manager at Mattel. "Additionally, Intelsat's network is very high-quality, which provides us with a tangible business value we can pass along to our cellular customers." Flavien Bachabi, Regional Vice President, Africa & Middle East for Intelsat's Data, Carrier & Internet unit, stated, "Intelsat, because of its network flexibility and reach, is significantly contributing to the expansion of mobile services and overall telephony penetration in Africa. Our robust network is well-suited to provide cost-effective backhaul of cellular services to mobile operators looking to expand domestically or internationally in any region."
