Washington (AFP) Sep 15, 2005 US President George W. Bush on Thursday backed a plan to close or reorganize 33 major US military bases and more than 800 military facilities, the White House said. Bush's action forwards the Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommendations to Congress, which can reject the package in its entirety or allow it to go into force by taking no action. The Pentagon hopes to save tens of billions of dollars from the restructuring, and at the same time align its base structure in the United States to a major overhaul of its force posture around the world.
