London (UPI) Dec 28, 2006 A team of British military personnel has become the first service members to visit the South Pole in nearly 100 years. The team, comprised of soldiers from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, arrived at the landmark Wednesday, becoming the first British military members to explore the pole since Walter Scott in 1912, The Times of London reported Thursday. "As I stood at the South Pole I was unable to contain the overwhelming feeling of relief and my eyes filled with tears," Royal Marines Capt. Sean Chapple told the newspaper. The team plans a service Saturday for all people who have perished while attempting to reach and explore the pole. The team will then begin its trek back to its base. Washington (AFP) Dec 27, 2006The United States on Wednesday proposed listing polar bears as threatened, marking the first time the US administration has singled out climate change as the potential driving force behind the demise of a species. The proposal by the Interior Department's US Fish and Wildlife Service is linked to the fact that rising temperatures in the Arctic are reducing the sea ice that polar bears need for hunting, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne told a news conference. |
