Boeing EDD Completes Delivery of Linearized C-Band Amplifiers to Orbital

The Orbital GEO bus offers satellite operators a mid size option with no reduction in performance

Boeing has completed the delivery of the third flight set of Linearized Channel-Amplified Traveling Wave Tube Amplifiers to Orbital Sciences. The C-Band payload hardware will be integrated into three Galaxy satellites for the PanAmSat Corporation.

Boeing Electron Dynamic Devices, Inc., or EDD, located in Torrance, Calif., builds the amplifiers and is a leading provider of high reliability products to space and defense customers.

"Completing the final delivery of these amplifiers, 96 in total, is a significant milestone for EDD," said Chris Stephens, vice president and general manager at EDD. "We have successfully proven to our customers that we can deliver a higher-level integrated product with the same high-quality and reliability as our traditional components."

Communication satellites use traveling wave tube amplifiers as the final amplifier to transmit radio frequency signals back to Earth for a variety of applications including voice, video and data. On satellites that carry a large number of signals in a single channel, a linearizer is often added to the tube amplifier to cancel the amplifier distortion.

This results in clearer communications that benefit the customers of the satellite operator. The final assembly is referred to as a linearized channel-amplified traveling wave tube amplifier.

The successful delivery of the amplifiers to Orbital Sciences is the latest in a series of events reflecting EDD's commitment to the satellite market. EDD recently introduced an enhanced, high efficiency C-Band traveling wave tube amplifier into their product family. EDD continues to demonstrate it has both the products and manufacturing capability to effectively support the satellite market.
