Rome (AFP) Oct 29, 2010 Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said Friday he had reached a deal with mayors in the Naples region to end a garbage crisis that has led to angry clashes and stinking waste piling up in streets. "After intensive discussions, we have found a solution," Berlusconi told reporters after a meeting of 18 mayors in affected towns. "The second landfill in Terzigno... will not be opened and we will continue with necessary legislative modifications," he said. The talks came after more than two weeks of clashes in Terzigno where residents protested a decision by local authorities to open Europe's biggest landfill in the area, where there is already a dump. "By the end of next week we will have a law modifying the document which led to the opening of the second landfill," he said. The problem of the build-up of garbage would be solved by the immediate opening of composting facilities in affected communities, Berlusconi said. Berlusconi travelled to Naples directly from a European summit in Brussels, underlining the importance of the crisis in Italy. The long-running waste issue has been blamed on a lack of local incinerators, and landfill sites controlled by the local mafia, the Camorra, some of which were used for the illegal dumping of toxic waste. Tensions have been rising in the Naples region on this flashpoint issue, which helped Berlusconi to his election victory in 2008 after he promised to stamp out the waste disposal problem in the area.
