Azerbaijan Joins Intersputnik
Moscow, Russia (SPX) Oct 04, 2004 The Republic of Azerbaijan has joined the Intersputnik International Organization of Space Communications. In May 2004 Azerbaijan's decision to accede to this Organization was approved by the Milli Mejlis (Parliament) and in September 2004 the depositary-government represented by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs received instruments of ratification of Intersputnik's regulatory documents by the Republic of Azerbaijan. While on an official visit in Baku Intersputnik's delegation headed by Director General Gennady Kudryavtsev met on September 27 with Ali Mamed oglu Abbasov, Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan, who signed the Operating Agreement of Intersputnik � an international interdepartmental agreement. Parties to this Agreement are national telecommunications organizations (Signatories) appointed by the governments. Also, Mr. Abbasov and Mr. Kudryavtsev discussed the current situation on the satellite communications market in the region, Azerbaijan's government policy in the field of information technologies and the interaction of the Telecommunications Administration of Azerbaijan with Intersputnik. On September 28 Intersputnik's delegation was received by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Artur Tahir oglu Rasizadeh. "Cooperation of Azerbaijan with Intersputnik's member-countries meets mutual interests. Azerbaijan is ready to participate in all aspects of the Organization's activity," noted Artur Rasizadeh. Having thanked the Prime Minister for the cordial welcome, Gennady Kudryavtsev stressed that Intersputnik attaches very much importance to the qualitatively new level of cooperation with Azerbaijan. "We feel that there exists a huge potential for the development of the satellite communications market in the country and the Caspian region as a whole. The accession of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Intersputnik Organization will undoubtedly further this development," Gennady Kudryavtsev said. Established in 1971 under the intergovernmental agreement on the establishment of an international system and organization of satellite communications, Intersputnik is an international intergovernmental organization headquartered in Moscow. The Organization's mission is to contribute to the strengthening and development of economic, scientific, technical and cultural relations by communications as well as by radio and television broadcasting via satellites; co-operation and co-ordination of efforts of the member-countries in designing, establishing, operating and developing an international satellite communications system. Intersputnik can be joined by the government of any state which shares the Organization's principles of activity. Initially Intersputnik had nine member countries. Now that Azerbaijan joined the Organization, this number grew to twenty five. Intersputnik provides integrated communications services to broadcasters, telecom operators and corporate customers via the LMI-1 satellite (75 East) of Lockheed Martin Intersputnik joint venture as well as Russian Express-A series satellites. Stratos Steps Closer To Xantic Acquisition
