Atlas launches Intelsat 805


Washington DC - June 18, 1998 -
Intelsat 805 was successfully launch Thursday from Cape Canaveral by a Lockheed Martin Atlas IIAS launch vehicle. Part of the latest generation of Intelsat satellites, the Intelsat 805 features 28 C-band and 3 Ku-band high-power transponders. The spacecraft will be deployed at 304.5(degrees)E in the Atlantic Ocean Region, from where it will deliver high-quality multimedia services to the Americas and Europe.

Specifically designed to offer simultaneous, connectivity over the Americas and Europe, the Intelsat 805 satellite allows delivery to both sides of the Atlantic with a single transponder. The simultaneous connectivity, combined with high C-band e.i.r.p. levels up to 40 dBW, make the Intelsat 805 the ideal choice to deliver simple and cost-effective solutions for any multimedia applications, such as Internet, tele-medecine, tele-education, compressed digital video, and other services supported by satellite news gathering (SNG) equipment and VSAT networks.

EMBRATEL, Intelsat's Signatory for Brazil, has already leased several transponders on the Intelsat 805 satellite, many of which will be primarily dedicated to carry internet traffic. ``Internet is one of our fastest growing services,'' said Mr. Ulysses Santos, Executive Assistant to International Director at EMBRATEL; ``and the Intelsat 805 satellite provides ideal connectivity and flexible service options to deliver high-quality Internet access at competitive prices to our customers.''

Because of the high power, the Intelsat 805 has the ability to reach operators with antennas as small as 1.8 meters, allowing for instant Internet backbone connectivity at lower infrastructure costs while bypassing terrestrial network congestion. In addition, the Intelsat 805 offers progressive activation of service, which allows customers to receive guaranteed access to capacity while paying only as their needs expand. The spacecraft is expected to commence commercial service in the middle of July 1998 upon completion of orbital maneuvers and in-orbit testing.

    Satellite Launch To Boost DTH In India

    The successful launch Thursday of India's heaviest satellite from spaceport of Kourou in French Guyana may have boosted the country's space research efforts to yet another level, but it has also lifted the spirits of at least three Direct-To-Home televisions broadcasters, one of which has been waiting for years to launch its services in India.
