An Ancient Martian Caldera In Apollinaris Patera

Apollinaris Patera is an ancient shield volcano measuring approximately 180 by 280 kilometers at its base and rising to a maximum of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) above the surrounding terrain. Shield volcanoes are large volcanic structures with gently sloping flanks.

The caldera of Apollinaris Patera takes the form of a large crater approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) in diameter. In this false-color image, north is to the right. The image also shows the terrain partly covered by thin, diffuse clouds indicated by bluish-tinted areas.

This false-color image was captured on 26 October 2004 by the High-Resolution Stereo Camera onboard ESA's Mars Express spacecraft with a ground resolution of approximately 11.1 meters (36 feet) per pixel.

Aeroflex Awarded Mars Science Lab Contracts

Aeroflex Incorporated announced Friday that its Motion Control Division has been awarded a contract for Mars Science Laboratory high-torque actuators from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. In addition, Aeroflex has been awarded a contract for a series of gearheads for the MSL low- and medium-torque actuators.
