South Korea picks L3 for K21 transmission kits
Seoul (UPI) Feb 23, 2017 - L3 Technologies was awarded a $17.3 million contract to supply 800-horsepower transmission kits to power South Korea's K21 infantry fighting vehicles.

The K21 is marketed as a next-generation platform, and has been designed by Hanwha Defense Systems to engage enemy infantry fighting vehicles on the battlefield. L3's contract with the South Korean government also includes transmission kits to power the country's light recovery vehicles.

"We are pleased to receive this important award, which builds on our long-standing partnership with the Republic of Korea by delivering L3 systems that are the most widely used, battle-proven combat vehicle transmissions in the medium-weight class today," L3 chairman and CEO Michael Strianese said in a press release.

Strianese went on to add the agreement with South Korea expands the company's international business, and includes follow-on opportunities.

The transmission kits will be provided by L3 Combat Propulsion Systems, located in Muskegon, Mich.

South Korea is procuring the K21 as a replacement for the K200 armored transport vehicle. The newer variant is 20 percent lighter than its predecessor, and is armed with a 105mm turret weapon.

Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings will purchase Coleman Aerospace for $15 million in a move company leaders say will expand their missile target vehicle business.

Coleman, currently a subsidiary of L3 Technologies, will operate as a subsidiary of Aerojet Rocketdyne under the name Aerojet Rocketdyne Coleman Aerospace after the acquisition is complete.

Aerojet Rocketdyne leaders says the purchase will expand its missile target catalogue to include small, medium and intermediate ballistic missile targets in addition to small launch vehicles.

"The addition of Coleman's vehicle integration expertise supports our growth strategy for offering an expanded range of products and services to the defense and space markets," Aerojet Rocketdyne CEO and president Eilleen Drake said in a press release. "This deal represents a sound investment in both advanced technologies and new capabilities that build upon our decades of experience as the nation's leading propulsion provider."

Coleman formed in 1980, and has served as a contractor and subcontractor for suborbital launch vehicles, payloads, and launch services. It also develops and integrates ground and air-launched ballistic missile targets for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.

The company is expected to produce $40 million in revenue in 2017.
