AEROFLEX Adds Plainview PW5032 RadHard To Product Line

"We listened to our customers using the PWM5031 who needed the capability of a higher output drive voltage, but did not want to change their present design," said Steve Friedman, standard product marketing manager.

Aeroflex Plainview has added the RadHard-by-Design PWM controller to its product line up. The PWM5032 high-speed, low power controller joins the PWM5031 which is currently in production. The RadHard PWM Controller was developed in partnership with Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics Lab and the Technology Applications Group for the Mars Technology program, part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program.

Aimed at the military, defense and commercial satellite markets, the PWM5032 complements Aeroflex Plainview's line of RadHard microelectronic power products.

The PWMs were designed using radiation-hardness techniques to insure the product meets radiation tolerance (>1M-Rad), provides the necessary features to implement DC to DC fixed frequency current or voltage mode control schemes with a minimal external parts count.

Internally implemented low power dissipation circuits include under-voltage lockout, a precision voltage reference for accuracy at the error amp input, sleep and enable control pins, a "power good" indicator, logic to insure latched operation, selectable duty cycle control, and a dual totem pole output stage designed to source of sink high peak current. Its feature set and drive capability can be applied to PWM implemented motor drive control designs.

The enhancement to the PWM5032, compared to the PWM5031, is an output stage driver that can operate and output 12 volts. This provides a higher drive voltage for applications that require control of larger external transistor when higher voltage converter designs are required.

Both the PWM5031/PWM5032 have two logic level inputs for implementing shutdown functions; a SLEEP pin disables all chip functions and puts the chip into a very low power consumption mode, while the EN pin shuts down all functions except the reference, bias generators and auxiliary amplifier.

"We listened to our customers using the PWM5031 who needed the capability of a higher output drive voltage, but did not want to change their present design," said Steve Friedman, standard product marketing manager. "The 12 Volt drive enhancement aids the customer with applications requiring higher voltage switching and since the PWM5032 is drop-in compatible with the PWM5031, users can easily switch to the PWM5032."

"Our aerospace customers designing DC-DC converters need well documented commercially available off the shelf (COTS) PWM controllers," continued Friedman. "The PWM5031/PWM5032 monolithic units are optimized for applications featuring Buck, Flyback, Boost or Forward and Center tapped push-pull converters. These devices are also well suited to drive motors requiring PWM control."

"Another differentiator of the PWM5031/PWM5032 from other products in the market is a proven RadHard CMOS process that yields 1M-Rad(Si) and SEU of 100MeVcm2/gm, low quiescent power dissipation of 20mW and especially our shutdown logic feature.

The PWM5031/PWM5032 have two logic level inputs for implementing shutdown functions; a SLEEP pin disables all chip functions and puts the chip into a very low power consumption mode, while the EN pin shuts down all functions except the reference, bias generators and auxiliary amplifier. We believe this is a benefit to any type of satellite or low power application."

The PWM5032 is available in a 24-pin (0.6"L x 0.3"W x 0.13H) hermetic ceramic Gull lead package, MIL-PRF-38534 screening up to Class K. A Standard Microcircuit Drawing (SMD) number will be available end of this year. Prototypes are available now with production units in first quarter of 2007. The PWM5032-S, Class K, screened product is $550.00 in lots of 100. Please contact us for die availability and pricing.
