Jakarta, Aug 8, 2006 Clashes between soldiers and police on the Indonesian island of Sumatra Tuesday left one soldier and one policeman dead, a police spokesman said. A soldier on board a truck carrying palm oil that was stopped by a police roadblock was shot dead during an ensuing "misunderstanding", national police deputy spokesman Anton Bahrul Alam told AFP. "We regret the misunderstanding between our personnel... and members of the Musi Rawas military command," Alam said, adding that the incident took place in South Sumatra's Musi Rawas district. Soldiers later attacked the local police headquarters, killing an officer, he said. One soldier and one policeman were also injured. The provincial heads of the police and armed forces have since met and agreed to form a joint team to investigate the incident. "It is still being investigated, but those who fired shots will face sanctions," Alam said. "The situation there is now back under control," he added. Violence between soldiers and police is not uncommon in Indonesia, sparked sometimes by territorial disputes over illegal activities or more trivial spats. Police split from the military's command in 1999. Corruption in both is considered to be endemic.
