London, Aug 1, 2006 Britain gave away 71 heavily-armoured Land Rovers to Iraq's police force last September, The Sun newspaper reported on Tuesday. The all-purpose-vehicles were given up as part of a British government effort to build up the war-torn country's security forces. The Sun reported that British soldiers in the country, by contrast, were using soft-skinned Land Rovers. The heavy armour on the now Iraqi-owned Land Rovers can withstand mine blasts, but British officials said they were too difficult to manoeuvre, and could not go off-road, the tabloid said. A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman declined to comment on the content of the newspaper's report, telling AFP: "The United Kingdom helps to provide Iraqi security forces with equipment necessary to help them to take responsbility for their own security." "British commanders are provided with the best available range of vehicles to successfully do the job in hand."
