Typhoon Kaemi forces 2,600 to evacuate homes in Philippines Manila (AFP) Jul 25, 2006 Waist-deep floods triggered by Typhoon Kaemi on Tuesday forced at least 2,600 people to flee their homes near the Philippine capital Manila, civil defense officials said. Evacuees in the Manila area, most of them from Valenzuela City north of the capital, sought shelter in schools or with relatives after Kaemi unleashed heavy rains on the northern Philippines, the officials said. The suburban cities of Malabon and Navotas were also hit by flooding but local officials did not immediately release figures about evacuations in those areas. Kaemi passed near the Philippines on Monday before heading to Taiwan, but the heavy rains continued into Tuesday, forcing the government to cancel classes for two days straight in Manila and the northern provinces.
