Taipei (AFP) Jul 25, 2006 Typhoon Kaemi pounded Taiwan with strong winds and heavy rain overnight, forcing flights to be cancelled and leaving four people injured, rescuers said Tuesday. The four were slightly injured when the bus they were in was hit by falling rocks in eastern Hualien county, said the National Fire Agency, which coordinated rescue efforts. Kaemi, which means "ant" in Korean, had a radius of 200 kilometres (120 miles) and was packing winds of up to 119 kilometres per hour at its centre as it headed towards mainland China, the central weather bureau said. The storm made landfall in Taiwan late Monday in eastern Taitung county, disrupting road and air traffic and forcing some offices to close. The bureau warned that torrential rain and strong winds would continue as the typhoon veered toward China. Some shipping companies suspended services while fishermen sought shelter in harbours, with the weather bureau warning that the powerful winds could whip up high waves. Taiwan was earlier this month hit by another storm, Bilis, which left three dead on the island before going on to pound mainland China and leaving more than 600 people there dead.
