Russian ex-minister released from jail, put under house arrest Moscow (AFP) Jul 21, 2006 Russia's supreme court released a former nuclear minister from detention Friday and put him under house arrest after he was earlier extradited from a Swiss jail, Russian news agencies said. Adamov's lawyer, Genri Reznik, told AFP that the supreme court had ruled to put Adamov under house arrest to await trial on fraud charges. "I have a lot of life experience now," Yevgeny Adamov said after his release in comments broadcast on Russia's NTV television channel. Moscow and Washington had both asked for the extradition of Adamov -- nuclear minister from 1998 to 2001 -- after he was detained in Switzerland in May 2005. Russian officials were believed to be concerned that Adamov could reveal state secrets if he was sent to the United States. Adamov was wanted in the United States on fraud and money-laundering charges in connection with nine million dollars sent by the US government to help Russia improve nuclear safety. In Russia, Adamov is accused of embezzling 17 million dollars from state coffers. In December 2005, Switzerland's supreme court ruled that Adamov be sent to Russia.
