For ailing US nuclear industry, new plants a shot in the arm

Washington (AFP) Dec 23, 2017
The US nuclear power industry got a boost this week when state authorities in Georgia gave the go-ahead to complete construction on two new reactors. But this may not reverse the industry's recent decline. The Georgia Public Service Commission on Thursday approved construction of Vogtle reactors three and four, the last planned reactors of this type in the United States. A project in South Carolina was halted in July. The two new reactors at the Vogtle plant in Georgia are expected to enter ... read more

Scientists develop new mode of energy generation from bituminous coal
Yekaterinburg, Russia (SPX) Dec 18, 2017
Bituminous coal comprises over 90% of organic fuels in the lithosphere of the Earth. By burning coal and other fossil fuels one can get electrical power (which is mainly happening at HPPs). However, the existing generation methods are not efficient, bad for the environment, and extremely resource-demanding (i.e. producing a lot of waste). Coal production and burning lead to soil and air pollutio ... more

China on Thursday increased the maximum speed of bullet trains on the Beijing-Shanghai line to 350 kilometres (217 miles) per hour, six years after a fatal accident led to a speed cap. The speed limit had been reduced to 300 kilometres per hour after 40 people died in a high-speed train crash near Wenzhou in July 2011.
