Czechs wind up black coal mining in green energy switch
Prague (AFP) Jan 29, 2026 The Czech Republic will stop mining black coal at the end of January, closing its last mine in a switch to greener energy sources, state mining company OKD said Thursday. Like other European countries, the Czech Republic - an EU member of 10.9 million - is divesting from fossil fuels including black coal, used in heating plants or steelworks, to reduce emissions in line with EU targets.
