Asia shrugs off global banking shake-up
Hong Kong (AFP) Sept 13, 2010
Asian banks' shares rallied on Monday as regulators and investors shrugged off the biggest revamp to global banking rules in decades, confident that regional lenders were already in good shape. The stricter new rules - known as Basel III - were agreed on Sunday at a meeting in Switzerland of international central bankers and regulators, who said they would avert any repeat of the devastating world financial crisis. MIT Researchers Develop A Way To Funnel Solar Energy
Boston MA (SPX) Sep 13, 2010
Using carbon nanotubes (hollow tubes of carbon atoms), MIT chemical engineers have found a way to concentrate solar energy 100 times more than a regular photovoltaic cell. Such nanotubes could form antennas that capture and focus light energy, potentially allowing much smaller and more powerful solar arrays. "Instead of having your whole roof be a photovoltaic cell, you could have little s ... more

Many Roads Lead To Superconductivity
Berlin, Germany (SPX) Sep 13, 2010
Since their discovery in 2008, a new class of superconductors has precipitated a flood of research the world over. Unlike the previously familiar copper ceramics (cuprates), the basic structure of this new class consists of iron compounds. Because the structure of these compounds differs from the cuprates in many fundamental ways, there is hope of gaining new insights into how the phenomenon of ... more

How Can We Use Neutrinos To Probe Dark Matter In The Sun
Evora, Portugal (SPX) Sep 13, 2010
The existence of Dark Matter particles in the Sun's interior seems inevitable, despite dark matter never having been observed (there or elsewhere), despite intensive ongoing searches. Once gravitationally captured by the Sun, these particles tend to accumulate in its core. In a paper to be published in the scientific journal " Science", Dr. Ilidio Lopes and Professor Joseph Silk propose that the presence of dark matter in the Sun's interior causes a significant drop in its central temperature. ... read more
