Scientists say US figures on spilled oil in Gulf too low
Washington (AFP) Aug 18, 2010
A new analysis suggests nearly 80 percent of the crude that leaked into the Gulf of Mexico may still be in the ocean, throwing into question government estimates that were significantly lower. On August 4, the US government said clean-up efforts and natural degradation had elimated some 74 percent of the 4.9 million barrels of oil believed to have spilled from the ruptured Macondo well into the Gulf's seawater. "The vast majority of the oil from the BP oil spill has either evaporated or been bur ... read more

Mexico eyes deeper oil drilling in shadow of Gulf disaster
Sonda De Campeche, Mexico (AFP) Aug 16, 2010
Firefighters leapt forward with a gushing hose on a Gulf of Mexico oil rig as fake victims were stretchered off in a practice run following BP's Deepwater Horizon disaster. The Mexican drill came amid fears of a repeat catastrophe, and as producers like Mexico chase reserves into deeper and more dangerous waters. One of the world's top oil producers, Mexico currently churns out some 2.6 ... more

Scots scientists create car biofuel from whisky by-products
London (AFP) Aug 17, 2010
Whisky lovers have another excuse to enjoy a dram - scientists in Scotland on Tuesday unveiled a biofuel to help power cars developed from the by-products of the distillation process. Researchers at Edinburgh Napier University have developed the biofuel and filed a patent for the product, which they said could be used to fuel ordinary cars without any special adaptations. The biofuel, w ... more

Wax, Soap Clean Up Obstacles To Better Batteries
Richland WA (SPX) Aug 17, 2010
A little wax and soap can help build electrodes for cheaper lithium ion batteries, according to a study in Nano Letters. The one-step method will allow battery developers to explore lower-priced alternatives to the lithium ion-metal oxide batteries currently on the market. "Paraffin provides a medium in which to grow good electrode materials," said material scientist Daiwon Choi of the Dep ... more

Which Type Of Electricity Generation Has The Least Impact On Climate?
Stuttgart, Germany (SPX) Aug 17, 2010
Coal-fired power stations burn lignite or, for the most part, coal imported from overseas. Solar cells need crystalline silicon that first needs to be extracted from quartz, an energy-intensive process. Therefore, when examining the climate compatibility of power generating plants, it makes sense to not restrict the analysis just to the operation of the plant. Instead, the total energy required should be considered across the entire service life of the plant, typically in excess of 30 years. Viewe ... read more
