'Top kill' bid to plug oil leak fraught with uncertainty
New Orleans, Louisiana (AFP) May 29, 2010
BP offered little insight Saturday as to whether its latest effort to plug a disastrous Gulf of Mexico leak would work, as local officials sought million of dollars from the oil giant. BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said engineers were still feeding heavy drilling fluid into the leaking well head, hoping to overcome it and ultimately seal it with cement, but that the results would not be clear for at least another day. "To date it hasn't yet stopped the flow. That's what I do know," he ... read more

Sailor Reflects On NASA Technology That Saved His Life
Greenbelt MD (SPX) May 27, 2010
Just seven days after setting sail for a tiny island off the eastern tip of Puerto Rico on Dec. 26, 2009, Missourian Dennis Clements thought his life was over; his crippled 34-foot Fiberglas sailboat - buffeted for four days by gale-force winds and high seas - had capsized, tossing him into the frigid waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. "At one point, I saw the mast pointed straight down t ... more

The outgoing British head of the European Union's military staff on Thursday said a French-led drive for a single EU military command centre was unworkable. Obama warns new oil leak cap method 'not without risk'
Washington (AFP) May 29, 2010
US President Barack Obama sounded a note of worry Saturday after BP's latest bid to halt the "enraging" Gulf of Mexico oil leak failed, warning the new plan underway was risky. Hours after the British energy giant announced its "top kill" method over the past several days to try and cap and cement the ruptured well head was being abandoned, and a day after he visited the US Gulf Coast, Obama ... more

Environmental groups welcome Obama oil freeze
Los Angeles (AFP) May 27, 2010
Environmental activists campaigning for a halt on Arctic oil exploration welcomed President Barack Obama's decision to halt planned drilling in two regions off the coast of Alaska. A coalition of groups led by the Alaska Wilderness League had been lobbying for the suspension of Shell Oil's proposed exploratory drilling in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, due to begin off the coast of Alaska in July. Those projects were placed on hold Thursday as Obama unveiled tough moves to suspend new drilling a ... read more
