Top kill stops leak, Obama targets offshore drilling
New Orleans, Louisiana (AFP) May 27, 2010
BP's risky bid to plug a Gulf of Mexico well appeared to be working Thursday, but new data showed it was already the worst oil spill in US history with a huge slick fouling the seas. Berlin (UPI) May 26, 2010
Will Royal Dutch Shell do to the Arctic what BP did to the Gulf of Mexico? That's the question troubling environmental experts across the globe ever since the Dutch minerals giant Shell announced its plan to begin exploratory oil drilling this summer in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas, two of the most pristine ecosystems on the planet. The seas near the Arctic National Wildlife Ref ... more

US senators unveil plan to aid Haiti orphans
Washington (AFP) May 26, 2010
Three US senators on Wednesday unveiled a bill to clear away hurdles to citizenship for roughly 1,000 Haitian orphans whose adoptions by US parents were rushed because of a January earthquake. US and Haitian authorities cleared the children to join their adoptive parents after the disaster. But without the complete paperwork necessary to finalize their adoptions, a roadblock has been raised to what would normally be automatic US citizenship upon entry into the United States. "The unprecedented d ... read more
