A short circuit in the generator of one of two reactors at Bulgaria's nuclear power plant at Kozloduy forced authorities to shut the reactor down early Saturday morning, officials at the plant said.

"A short circuit in the excitor chains of the generator of reactor No 5 prompted us to switch off the whole 1,000-megawatt bloc from the electricity grid of the country," safety director Mitko Yankov told AFP.

The failure occurred at 3:29 am (1229 GMT) Saturday morning, the company said in a statement Saturday.

It adding there was no radiation leakage threat whatsoever after the switch-off.

"The failure does not pose any threat to the safety of the reactor itself as it occurred in the system of the generator that transmits electricity to the grid," Yankov also said.

A special comittee was examining the failure Saturday to determine its cause and the necessary repairs, he added.

Meanwhile, the plant's other 1,000-megawatt reactor No 6 was working at 98 percent capacity Saturday, the company statement added.

The two 1,000-megawatt facilities are the only two blocs out of a total of six at the northwest Kozloduy plant which were considered safe enough to operate after Bulgaria joined the European Union this year.

The Balkan state in 2002 already mothballed the two oldest 440-megawatt reactors and also shut down two other old but revamped 440-megawatt blocs on the eve of its accession to the European Union on January 1 this year.

The country, which used to be a major electricity exporter in the Balkans before joining the EU, is planning to compensate for the lost capacity by constructing two more pressurised water reactors of 1,000 megawatts each at another plant at Belene, to the country's north.
