Blizzard Dumps Record Snowfall On New York![]() New York gets a dump of snow not seen since 1947. |
The snowfall in Central Park measured a record 26.9 inches (68.33 centimeters) deep at 4:00 pm local time, Bruce Sullivan, senior forecaster with the National Weather Service, told AFP.
That broke the record of 26.4 inches (67.06 centimeters) set in December 26-27, 1947, he said.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg earlier warned that the storm was dangerous, with gusting winds to 40 miles per hour (64 kilometers) and extremely poor visibility, the city's official web site said.
The winter storm, which moved into the mid-Atlantic and northeastern states Saturday, has left more than 200,000 people without electricity and shut down air traffic.
