Beyond Gravity has expanded its Swiss production capacity for solar array drive mechanisms (SADMs) by doubling its manufacturing floor area, enabling a fivefold increase in annual output from 36 to 200 units. The expansion underscores the company's growing role in supplying critical satellite hardware to the global space industry.

"These mechanisms allow satellites to continuously align their solar wings toward the sun for maximum power generation," explained Oliver Grassmann, Executive Vice President Satellites at Beyond Gravity. "By doubling our manufacturing area we have increased our production capacity fivefold. We can now produce 200 mechanisms for aligning solar wings per year instead of the previous 36. This year alone, we have already delivered more units than in the past three years combined."

Grassmann described the development as a key milestone in the company's drive toward industrialized, modular, and standardized production. "We are focusing on modular and standardized designs to support scalability," he added. Beyond Gravity is already developing the next generation of SADMs designed for two-axis alignment, which will enable even greater solar efficiency.

The company, a global leader in solar array mechanisms, anticipates additional growth opportunities in the United States. "We sell our mechanisms worldwide, primarily in Europe and the United States," Grassmann noted. "Should demand from the U.S. market continue to grow, we are prepared to expand production capacity at our existing facility in Titusville, Florida, where we currently operate a high-volume, highly automated satellite panel production."

Beyond Gravity's mechanisms serve platforms ranging from microsatellites to large Earth observation and telecommunications spacecraft. They have been featured in numerous high-profile missions, including ESA's BepiColombo mission to Mercury, NASA's Artemis lunar program, and ESA's Hera planetary defense mission launched in October 2024.

How ageing solar panels can power a second life
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Oct 09, 2025
Australia's world-leading rooftop solar adoption is generating a mounting waste challenge as many photovoltaic systems are retired early and routed to landfill. A University of South Australia team outlines how reuse standards, incentives, testing and certification could extend panel lifetimes and shrink solar's environmental footprint. The study led by UniSA PhD candidate Ishika Chhillar reviews technical, economic and regulatory barriers to reuse and maps a mitigation pathway to build a credible ... read more
