AI constellation to monitor UK water networks with Quub tech

Quub UK has secured GBP 1.3 million in funding through the OFWAT Water Breakthrough Challenge to launch its SpaceEye initiative. Over the next three years, the project will deploy six low-cost satellites designed to enhance monitoring capabilities across the UK's vast water network.

The European arm of Quub, Inc., headquartered in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, will develop and operate the satellites, which will provide high-frequency imaging analyzed by onboard AI. These satellites aim to help utilities detect leaks, contamination, and unauthorized water use across more than 210,000 miles of infrastructure.

"This is a massive breakthrough for the UK water industry," said Dan Lewis, Executive Director of Quub UK. "For the first time, utilities will have access to high-frequency satellite imagery-analyzed by AI within hours-to detect leaks, water quality issues, and unauthorized extractions across more than 210,000 miles of pipelines. We're excited to work with our partner water companies to deliver real value."

The satellite fleet will be constructed using modular 3D-printed components and sustainable materials. Their embedded AI capabilities allow for onboard data preprocessing, significantly cutting down on the need for ground-based communications and enabling rapid delivery of insights.
