Four Canadian soldiers killed, 10 wounded in Afghanistan attacks
Ottawa, Aug 3, 2006 Four Canadian soldiers were killed and 10 wounded in three separate attacks on NATO forces Thursday in southern Afghanistan, Canadian defence department officials said. The first roadside bomb blast hit a patrol securing a major east-to-west highway near the village of Pashmul about 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) southwest of Kandahar City at about 4:20 am, a military official said. A Canadian soldier was killed and another wounded. Three hours later, a second blast hit the same area and wounded three more Canadian troops in a light armored vehicle. None suffered life-threatening injuries. Then around 12:30 pm another International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) patrol was ambushed in the same area by insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenades. Three Canadian soldiers were killed and six wounded along with a local Afghan interpreter, officials said. "I can confirm that three Canadian soldiers were killed and six others were wounded in a rocket grenade attack near Pashmul at 12:30 pm local time," Lieutenant John Nethercott told AFP. The latest deaths bring to seven the number of ISAF troops killed in southern Afghanistan since the force on Monday took over command of the area from a US-led coalition that unseated the Taliban in late 2001. Twenty-three Canadian soldiers and one diplomat have died in the country since 2001. Prime Minister Stephen Harper said: "Today, our forces have suffered serious casualties in Afghanistan." "What the men and women in harm's way want and need to know in moments like this is that their government and Canadians stand behind their mission." "Make no mistakes ... through good times and bad, this government will honour their sacrifice. We will stand behind their mission, and we are proud of the work that they are doing." The NATO force in the south comprises nearly 8,000 ISAF troops -- including British, Canadian, Dutch and US soldiers.
