Nasdaq-listed Sina Corp, one of China's top Internet portals, said Thursday its second-quarter net profit rose to 10.4 million dollars on the back of strong advertising revenue growth.

The figure compared to 7.04 million dollars in the previous quarter.

The Shanghai-based company, which also sells wireless value-added services, reported earnings per share of 18 cents, up from 12 cents in the first quarter.

Revenues were 53.7 million dollars, compared to 46.7 million in the previous quarter.

Advertising revenues rose 33 percent quarter-over-quarter to 29.5 million dollars, due largely to Sina's coverage of the FIFA World Cup which brought 57.6 million visitors to the firm's World Cup website, the company said.

Advertising revenues accounted for 55 percent of Sina's total revenues in the second quarter, up from 47 percent last year.

Sina's chief executive Charles Chao said Sina saw its advertising base grow to 633 total advertisers in the second quarter from 515 in the same period last year.

Non-advertising revenues were down by one percent from the previous quarter to 24.2 million dollars, with revenues from Sina's mobile value-added services business coming in at 22.4 million dollars, also down one percent from the previous quarter.

Sina said it expects third-quarter revenues to be between 51 and 54 million dollars.

China has 111 million Internet users, the world's second-largest online population after the United States, while the nation's fast-rising economy is set to make the nation the global number one in a few years.
