British soldier killed in Iraq mortar attack London, Aug 1, 2006 A British soldier was killed in a mortar attack on a multinational force base in southern Iraq early Tuesday, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said. The soldier from Britain's 1st Battalion Light Infantry died after the strike on the base in Basra at 3:00 am (2300 GMT Monday), the MoD revealed the same day as three British troops serving in Afghanistan were reported killed. The soldier in Iraq was taken to hospital by helicopter but died from his injuries, the ministry said.
