Taiwan's Chi Mei Optoelectronics to build 30 million dollar plant in Foshan Taipei (AFP) Jul 24, 2006 Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp, one of Taiwan's leading flat panel display makers, said Monday it will invest 30 million US dollars to build a thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) module plant in China's Guangdong province. "The Foshan plant is scheduled to begin operations by the end of this year. It is expected to reach a monthly capacity of two million units in the fourth quarter of 2007," a Chi Mei Optoelectronics spokeswoman said. Foshan-based Nanhai Chi Mei Optoelectronics is Chi Mai's second production center in China, after the one at Ningbo, in central Zhejiang province. The Foshan investment has been approved by the Taiwan government which requires applications for mainland-bound projects worth more than 20 million dollars. The spokeswoman said the Foshan plant in southeastern China will work together with the Ningbo to serve Chi Mei's customers on the mainland. The Ningbo plant is operating with a capacity of 1.35 million units per month. The company is building another facility on the same complex which is scheduled to start operations in 2007.
