Low carbon taxes often fail to target emissions reduction

Most countries with low carbon taxes introduced them for reasons other than reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new study in One Earth. Researchers from Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg examined 19 national carbon taxes set below climate-effectiveness benchmarks between 1990 and 2023. Lead author Johan Lilliestam explained that such policies were often designed to raise revenue, reform tax systems, or meet international expectations rather than drive decarbonization. ... read more
