SKB Ready To Apply For Permits To Build Spent Nuclear Fuel Repository
Stockholm, Sweden (SPX) Oct 08, 2010
The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) has submitted its latest RD and D programme to the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority. Based on the programme SKB now has the knowledge to submit the applications to build a final repository for spent nuclear fuel in Forsmark. SKB plans to submit the applications in March 2011. At least 32 people have been killed in traffic accidents in China over the weekend as heavy smog and fog shrouded huge swathes of the country, state press said Sunday. Nine people died of suffocation when a rescue attempt went wrong at a lead and zinc ore mine in central China's Hunan province, state news agency Xinhua reported Saturday, citing local authorities. Hungary village evacuated as new toxic flood 'likely'

Hungarian authorities evacuated 800 villagers Saturday saying a second flood of toxic sludge from an aluminium processing plant was likely after new cracks appeared in a reservoir. The villagers were evacuated at dawn from the western village of Kolontar, closest to the reservoir that burst on Monday, killing seven people and injuring scores, and poisoning the surrounding countryside.
