Iran seen as tightening grip on Iraq
Baghdad (UPI) Feb 17, 2009
Allegations by the top U.S. general in Iraq that two politicians who organized the blacklisting of 350 candidates for March 7 elections are linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guards has heightened concern that Tehran is tightening its grip as U.S. forces withdraw. Making Flexible Solar Cells With Silicon Wire Arrays
Pasadena CA (SPX) Feb 18, 2010
Using arrays of long, thin silicon wires embedded in a polymer substrate, a team of scientists from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has created a new type of flexible solar cell that enhances the absorption of sunlight and efficiently converts its photons into electrons. Investigating The Random Motion Of Quantum Particles
Munich, Germany (SPX) Feb 18, 2010
Life would sometimes be so much easier if we were quantum particles. For example, if we were trying to find our way out of a strange town allowing chance telling us which way to go at every intersection. As objects of classical physics, this would mean becoming more and more lost in the centre of the road network. If we were particles that obeyed the laws of quantum mechanics, we would soo ... more

EDF eager to prolong life of reactors
Paris (UPI) Feb 17, 2009
French energy giant EDF is eager to extend the lifetime of its nuclear power plants from 40 years to 60 years but the move could require massive investments. The head of France's nuclear safety authority, Andre-Claude Lacoste, this week warned that EDF would have to modernize most of its reactors to have their lifetime extended. Such a modernization, Lacoste told the Financial Times, "without doubt would require massive investment." EDF, which is 85 percent owned by the French gov ... read more
