Electric Car Maker ZAP Adds Solar Option to Truck Design To Combat Global Warming
Santa Rosa CA (SPX) Mar 20, 2007
After a positive response for its XEBRA XERO, electric car pioneer ZAP has designed a solar option for its truck design, a photovoltaic panel that ZAP says can offer short-distance driving on sunlight alone.
ZAP intends to showcase the new XEBRA XERO (pronounced 'zebra zero') Truck at its March 23 dealer training as well as some up-coming industry events for automotive fleets. Company offi ... read more

Physicists Tailor Magnetic Pairings In Nanoscale Semiconductors
Stanford CA (SPX) Mar 20, 2007
Electrons love to zip around metals such as copper, especially if the metal is cooled to temperatures near absolute zero. But if they encounter a magnetic atom (say, iron) during their travels, the electrons will try to "screen," or cancel out, the magnetic atom's spin alignment by pairing with it. This pairing modifies the flow of electrons in the metal, in a phenomenon called the Kondo effect. ... more

New Lithium-Ion Battery Technology Created
Lausanne (UPI) Switzerland, March 12, 2007
Swiss scientists have created a technology that might lead to development of more powerful lithium-ion batteries for use in a wide range of electronic gear. Michael Gratzel and colleagues at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne note in current lithium-ion batteries, large quantities of carbon black, graphite or other conductive materials must be added to improve cathode conducti ... more
