China To Power Up With Biggest Solar Plants Ever
Shanghai (AFP) Nov 21, 2006
China intends to build one of the world's biggest solar power stations at a cost of 765 million dollars, state press reported Tuesday. The 100-megawatt facility, to be built in Dunhuang, an oasis town in northwest China's Gansu province, will be a collaborative effort between the local government and Beijing's Zhonghao New Energy Investment, Xinhua news said. The project will take five-years to construct, it added. The report followed plans announced by Australia last month to build the world's biggest solar power station, a 154 megawatt behemoth, which the builder said could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 400,000 tonnes a year.

    Navy Dreams
Washington DC (UPI) Nov 20, 2006
Last week, for three days running, the Washington Times carried front-page stories about the interception of a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, the Kitty Hawk, by a Chinese submarine.       Ultra-Intense Laser Blast Creates True 'Black Metal'
Rochester NY (SPX) Nov 22, 2006
"Black gold" is not just an expression anymore. Scientists at the University of Rochester have created a way to change the properties of almost any metal to render it, literally, black. The process, using an incredibly intense burst of laser light, holds the promise of making everything from fuel cells to a space telescope's detectors more efficient-not to mention turning your car into the blackest black around.

Accord Signed In France On Breakthrough Nuclear Reactor
    Paris (AFP) Nov 21, 2006
The EU and six nations signed a treaty Tuesday launching a multibillion-dollar experimental nuclear fusion research project, aimed at emulating the power of the sun to provide limitless, clean energy. "This is a new step in an exceptional adventure," French President Jacques Chirac said after leading the signing ceremony in Paris that ended decades of tortuous negotiations.

BMW To Launch First New Hydrogen-Powered Model
    Frankfurt (AFP) Nov 21, 2006
BMW, the German maker of luxury cars, said Tuesday that it planned to launch a new hydrogen-powered car based on its 7 Series model, initially in a very limited edition in 2007. The car will have a 12-cylinder 260 horse-power engine that can run either on liquid hydrogen or on petrol.

Geologists Find New Origins Of Appalachian Mountains
Athens, Ohio (SPX) Nov 22, 2006
Geologists have developed a new theory to explain how and when the Appalachian Mountain range was created. Their research redraws the map of the planet from 420 million years ago. The scientists recently discovered a piece of the Appalachian Mountains in southern Mexico, a location geologists long had assumed was part of the North American Cordillera.

Earthquake's Area Of Influence Larger Than Previously Thought
Barcelona, Spain (SPX) Nov 22, 2006
Dr Alvaro Corral, a Ramon y Cajal researcher for the UAB Department of Physics, studies the relationships between the time and place of earthquake occurrences (ie, the jumps between an initial earthquake and another earthquake at a later time in another place) using statistical physics methods.

Largest Superconducting Magnet Ever Switched On
London UK (SPX) Nov 21, 2006
The largest superconducting magnet ever built has successfully been powered up to its operating conditions at the first attempt. Called the Barrel Toroid because of its shape, this magnet is a vital part of ATLAS, one of the major particle detectors being prepared to take data at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the new particle accelerator scheduledto turn on in November 2007.

Sensor Networks Protect Containers, Navigate Robots
St. Louis MO (SPX) Nov 21, 2006
Agent 007 is a mighty versatile fellow, but he would have to take backseat to agents being trained at Washington University in St. Louis. Computer scientist engineers here are using wireless sensor networks that employ software agents that so far have been able to navigate a robot safely through a simulated fire and spot a simulated fire by seeking out heat.
