Recipients of the Third Annual Electronic Home of the Year Awards were divided into three levels - gold, silver and bronze, across 13 categories. Those awarded exemplified the far-reaching potential for incorporating audio, video, whole-home automation, lighting control and multi-functional electronics into today's electronic house. Entries were judged on the lifestyle benefits that result for home owners and how easy each system is to use. For the "Green Home" category, awards were based primarily on how well a home's technology seamlessly integrated with energy saving features.

EMA shows how much energy home occupants are using at any given time, selling back excess power from the solar panels to Florida Power and Light.

A Solaris "smart" home uses a network backbone to monitor energy use through occupancy sensors, which control lighting, automatically turn off vents, fans and lights, monitor water usage and present the eco-statistics through the home owner's computer. EMA provides environmental awareness by automatically adjusting to a home owner's lifestyle patterns and correcting for natural human oversight (eg. forgetting to turn off lights, fans etc.).
