Columbus OH (SPX) Oct 19, 2007 Ohio is investing in two new projects to develop utility-scale wind energy, further demonstrating the state's commitment to renewable energy innovation, according to the Ohio Business Development Coalition (OBDC), the nonprofit organization that markets the state for capital investment. "Ohio's commitment to wind energy will create economic development opportunities for communities across the state," said Governor Ted Strickland. "Ohio's strength in technology innovation, strong manufacturing base and world-class transportation infrastructure have attracted major investments to the state, and we are committed to continuing as a strong partner with Ohio's alternative energy industry." The Ohio Department of Development, through its Ohio Wind Production and Manufacturing Incentive Program, has awarded grants totaling $5 million to The Buckeye Wind Project. Developed by EverPower Renewables and the JW Great Lakes Wood County Wind Farm, The Buckeye Wind Project is the first large scale wind energy projects for the state. The Buckeye Wind Project is planned to meet the electricity needs for nearly 300,000 homes and the JW Great Lakes Wind Farm could power 15,000 homes. Both projects are located in northwest Ohio and are expected to be operational by June 30, 2009. "Ohio's strong manufacturing base and wind availability make the state a natural home for developing wind power," said Kevin Sheen, vice president of EverPower Renewables. "We look forward to helping Ohio harvest the power of wind." According to a recent study by the Washington, D.C.-based Renewable Energy Policy Project, Ohio would gain more than 13,000 new manufacturing jobs with an investment in wind energy. Ohio also is moving forward with feasibility studies for the installation of up to ten wind turbines off the coast of Lake Erie. If the yearlong study proves favorable, it will be the world's first instance of wind turbines installed in fresh water. "Businesses in the alternative energy industry are recognizing the benefits of locating in Ohio," said Ed Burghard, executive director for the Ohio Business Development Coalition. "Owners profit from the state's newly revamped tax code as well as the bottom-line benefits of better work-life balance for their employees. Ohio offers low-cost, low stress communities and a unique mix of micropolitan and metropolitan cities. This diversity provides executives and employees the resources and time to pursue their professional goals and personal aspirations without having to compromise one for the other. Ohio truly is the state of perfect balance." Community Email This Article Comment On This Article Related Links The Buckeye Wind Project Powering The World in the 21st Century at Energy-Daily.com
